Character Information
(Extra details in profile)
Name: Alice of Rankfort
Source Canon: Embric of Wulfhammer
Age: 19
Role In Canon: Superficially, she is the faithful sidekick/bodyguard character. Her extended role will be addressed in History.

History:
Alice is a poor young maid hailing from what used to be Rankfort. When her home was razed by a horde of harpies, she was taken prisoner with others and forced into labor. Said labor consisted of trying to clean up after the harpies themselves, and appease their insane whims (such as ordering her to clean mud). This hard labor did a great deal to train her physical strength, but also left her with a fear of harpies (naturally). [Note: The pdf manual that came with the deluxe edition mentions her having lost someone close to her but I found no mention of this in-game, but she no doubt lost EVERYONE close to her, so yeah.]

She was later rescued by Sir Embric and the rest of the Awesome Fellowship, the game world's most renowned (living) group of adventurers. And, as is so often the case, her rescue resulted in her becoming part of the help when the group's leader learned of his own apparent nobility and settled into a keep nestled in the temperate hills of Wulfhammer. She served them with the distinction of being the cause of numerous piles of broken furniture and, at times, structural damage to the castle itself (all of which being accidents). But her importance really starts when the Duchess of Elstwhere arrives, kicking off the game's events and dragging an eager Alice along behind her. She's smitten with the Duchess immediately and hopelessly, and while it's not quite right to say she does a good job of keeping it secret, the combination of the Duchess's... general friendliness with everyone... and the utter obviousness of her feelings to everyone make her keep from actually admitting it except at the last second (i.e. in her endings).

SERIOUS SPOILERS FOR THE STORY AHEAD (Highlight to read)
Through the circular events of most of the game, Alice is essentially one of the few certainties in the Duchess's life. She comes to her rescue, is always willing to help her put on or remove her clothes, breaks laws and goes on the lamb all for the Duchess. Eventually, as the Duchess climbs further up the rabbit hole, it comes to light that the entire experience (multiple, overlapping endings) is overlapping visions of the future presented in the Duchess's mindscape in a fairly coherent fashion by meshing details of events every time an ending is achieved, and the Duchess has been trapped in that mindscape by a devil. The Alice that appears in that mindscape, in the true-true ending, confesses to having been a shade of Embric, who became real in her mind after falling in love with her. She is, in her own words, "Embric, Ember, Alice, I'm all those things". The implication is that due to the similarities between Embric and Alice (whose birth name is revealed to have been Ember), the Duchess's mind had mixed or merged the visions of them in her mind, and that in all the endings where Embric returns for the Duchess, it's actually Alice.

Alice is, however, a real person outside of this mindscape, and the implications are that the real Alice will be much the same as the mindscape Alice, albeit with an accent more fitting of a scullery maid, and that while the events of the futurevisions may have been exaggerated or embellished with tawdry details, they are still representative of the real course of events the Duchess's life will follow. So even if I've spoiled freakin' everything here, you could still have fun picking apart the events of the game for what might have been real and what was just nonsense. It's fun! Alice will be taken from before the final ending before the waterfall where everything gets meta.

Personality:
Alice is the sort of person who would totally go to jail for her friends, and would eagerly step up to give her life for the person she loves (but would prefer to pick up said person and run the hell away if "Punch it until it dies" isn't an option). Most of the game, Alice follows along with whatever wacky schemes the Duchess gets into, no matter how stupid or dangerous. Even when the rest of the Awesome Fellowship is ready to have both of their heads on a platter for one indiscretion or another, Alice is always the one willing to stand by her. As the Duchess herself states, Alice is the only person to have been honest and kind to her right from the start. Others are wary of the Duchess's motives regarding Embric, or the Marque of Wulfhammer, or her relation to her former uncle Duke Greyghast, the monster who'd had her imprisoned and drugged for years. Alice is the sort of person who, if the Duchess had secretly turned out to be a vampire, would have eagerly volunteered to be her thrall.

She's a cheerful enough girl, but very clumsy. And with her strength, being clumsy has gotten her in a lot of trouble before. When you can "accidentally" punch a chunk out of a castle turret, you tend to have people question your capabilities as a maid. But since she's slightly more capable than her fellow maid, Ecinacea, whose only talents are laundry and bath preparation (and writing, which counts as a talent for undereducated maids), she has retained employment nevertheless. That doesn't mean she hasn't gotten dirty looks from the Awesome Fellowship whenever she tries to clean. It just means they're used to digging through the pile of stuff Alice broke for anything that's still useable.

Alice isn't very smart, not exactly. It might be better to say that she's just uneducated. Growing up under the fearful watch of schizophrenic bird people can make it hard to get a good education, even in a non-feudal setting. She only really manages to learn to read for the purpose of going through the Duchess' diaries (dream diary in particular <3) and as a barbarian class she had to spend extra skill points to do learn that much. But she isn't the sort to feel inferior about it. It's her lot in life and she's okay with that. She's a maid, and the Duchess has all the INT stats they could ever use. When you have the smartest woman you know nearby, and you trust her with your life, why would you care how smart you are? It's her clumsiness that really gets to her from time to time. The Duchess being around has helped her to greatly improve her problem, but a small pile of refuse from "accidents" is still a pile of broken stuff.

Still, Alice may be a little gullible. Just a little. Maybe. It's hard to tell, really, because Ecinacea is a weasel and has a bad habit of tricking people anyway. But Alice trust her (and probably everyone) a bit more than she ought to. Thankfully, though, she herself is trustworthy, and frankly somewhat guileless. The Duchess shares with Alice her myriad problems and secrets, and Alice, fantastically enough, refrains from blabbing about them. She is the Duchess' maid and confidant, and she couldn't be happier with that fact.

Abilities:
UNMATCHED POWERS OF UNDRESSING

Alice is a trained maid and servant, and also an Expert/Barbarian class. As such she has strength out the wazoo. Remember the part about putting holes in castle turrets? With her FISTS? On ACCIDENT?

Further information, all stats taken from the point in the game from which I'm taking her. If they need to be adjusted for more "realistic" D&D stats, I will do so, but honestly, I have no real sense of scale outside of how it works in the game.

She's strong, is basically her deal. Any more than that will have to be determined at a later date.

Sample:
Sample 1 (It's not much but it's honest, at least)
Sample 2 (A meme, only a couple posts but I liked that post :I)

Sample Post (Action) (She can't write, so she won't be making text entries anytime soon)
[An oddly-dressed maid lies dazed in a grassy clearing, like she fell off a mountain cliff and only took 20 damage from the fall. After a moment, she groans, and sits up to rub her forehead.]

Ow... Maybe I should have asked Her Grace to share some climbing whiskey after all. I must have fallen off the trail, but... Where is it?

[She pauses her external exposition for a moment to get up and look around. It isn't often you see a maid with lacy knuckledusters and a mithril garter fall out of the sky. Or out of her world, or wherever it is she fell from.]

Where'd the trail even go? That cliff looked steep, I oughta be able to see it, right? Jeez, Her Grace is going to worry if I don't get back soon-!

[And thus, because such a decision couldn't possibly be a bad one, Alice determines the best choice of action to take in her situation is to take off in no particular direction and start calling out "YOUR GRACE!" loudly, fists clenched in case she runs into a stray Anti-Paladin goon.]
